International recognition for sustainable medical waste treatment
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) organised the Global Call 2022 around innovative technologies and solutions for a sustainable future. The call attracted 452 submissions from 55 countries, from which seven winners were selected. The Medical & Health category focused specifically on sustainable solutions for the treatment of medical and biological waste.
The Sterilwave solution formed part of the winning entry in this category. The official award ceremony took place on 16 January 2023. For Sterilwave, this represents valuable international recognition of an approach that combines safety, waste reduction and sustainability.
Why this matters to healthcare organisations
Sterilwave enables Specific Hospital Waste and other suitable medical waste streams to be treated on site. The process combines mechanical shredding with controlled microwave treatment. Following treatment, waste volume can be reduced by up to approximately 80% and weight by up to approximately 20%, depending on the waste stream and process conditions.
This supports a broader development in healthcare: a shorter residence time for infectious waste within the organisation, lower waste volume and weight, potentially lower collection and processing costs, and greater scope to explore post-treatment routes and material recovery.
