Independent microbiology
The Microbiological Research Institute (IRM) tested Sterilwave in test series 100/0112-1 to 100/0112-141 under Appendix A of NF X 30-503. Reported reductions ranged from 7.41 to 8.68 log10 for bacteria, spores, mycobacteria, yeasts and moulds. Four separate regrowth series recorded 0 colony-forming units per gram on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28.
Netherlands: UMC Utrecht
SGS Netherlands measured Sterilwave exhaust on 17 September 2021 before and after HEPA and carbon filtration. Report EZEM-2021-08-00009 concludes that emissions after filtration met the then-applicable Dutch requirements for every substance class examined. On 30 March 2022, the City of Utrecht granted environmental permit HZ_WABO-21-46662 for the specified SZA laboratory waste stream. The decision records approximately 80% volume reduction, approximately 20% weight reduction and no process water, and states that the described decontamination method for this substream met the then-applicable minimum standard. New projects are assessed against the current Circulair Materialenplan and site-specific waste stream.
United Kingdom: Whipps Cross Treatment Facility
Independent report 16/0691 by Industrial Safety Solutions is the formal validation of two Sterilwave 440 systems against the pre-commencement conditions of Environment Agency permit EPR/DB3706HZ at Whipps Cross. Testing used biological indicators containing approximately 6 log10 Bacillus atrophaeus. Every tested sample achieved more than 4 log10 inactivation and therefore STAATT Level III. The report also found measured bio-aerosols well below the applied EPR 5.07 limits. This validation is model- and site-specific and is therefore presented as real-world SW440 evidence.
France and Europe
French interministerial circular DGS/EA1/DGPR/2012-335 of 6 September 2012 approved the Sterilwave pretreatment process for infectious healthcare waste. It cites INERIS technical and microbiological trials with results conforming to NF X 30-503. The circular also defines explicit acceptance boundaries, including exclusion of cytotoxic products and waste liable to contain non-conventional transmissible agents. In 2024, the European Commission Green Assist programme supported further assessment of environmental performance and circular end-use options for treated Sterilwave residue.

Scientific context: Mazzei & Specchia, Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering 11 (2023), 109309, identifies selective and rapid heating, high efficiency, limited heat loss, low emissions and suitability for on-site treatment among the advantages of microwave treatment. In their comparison, the authors describe microwaving and steam sterilization as economically competitive techniques with less environmental impact than incineration, landfilling and chemical treatment. The review is general and not a Sterilwave-specific validation; suitability remains dependent on the waste stream and process configuration. DOI 10.1016/j.jece.2023.109309.
